Fugitive Bosnian Serb Fighter ‘Hiding in Woods’

The Bosnian prosecution asked for an arrest warrant for former Bosnian Serb soldier Milos Zekic, who went on the run after being charged with killing four Bosniak civilians in Sekovici in 1992.

The prosecution requested the arrest warrant on Thursday after Zekic did not turn up for a court hearing and the Bosnian State Investigation and Protection Agency said it believed that he had gone on the run near Sekovici in north-eastern Bosnia, where the alleged crime was committed.

“It is assumed that he is in the woods above Sekovici and he is hiding there, because he knows the terrain as a hunter,” said judge Vesna Jesenkovic.

Zekic, a former member of the Bosnian Serb Army, is charged with killing four people with a rifle in the locker rooms of the Sekovici stadium, where Bosniak civilians from the villages of Osmaci and Memici were imprisoned in mid-May 1992.

Zekic’s lawyer Nenad Rubez said that he had contacted the suspect’s family, but they did not have any information on his whereabouts.

“His parents do not believe he is in the woods, because his father sent hunters to search the terrain,” Rubez said.

The court will decide on the prosecution’s request at a later date.
